Our 6th Form Forensics students recently enjoyed a day trip to the University of Bedfordshire to further their studies. The students participated in a range of activities on the day, using high-tech equipment and benefiting from expert advice from lecturers.
In one practical (pictured), students had to identify and separate amino acids using electrophoresis. This method has real-life applications, in identifying useful amino acids in the field for a range of purposes. For the second practical, students used thin layer chromatography to separate and identify a mixture of sugars in fruits. This can be used to compare the quality of fruits in industry.
The trip is part of a collaborative programme brokered between The Stockwood Park Academy and the University of Bedfordshire by Forensics teacher Mr Mfua, to raise our students' aspirations and give them the best possible opportunities to learn professional skills. The students had an absolutely fantastic time and learned lots; a winning combination!
